Buffalo Pottery blue and white transfer ware platter, titled “Doctor Syntax advertisement for a wife”.  Buffalo Pottery, Buffalo, New York, circa 1909.

Doctor Syntax was created by the artist Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) and writer William Combe (1742-1823), appearing in The Poetical Magazine in 1809.   The caricature was very popular and first published in book form in 1812.  The books continued to be printed into the 20th century.
