An important Barker Ellis silver plate champagne cooler, English, late 19th century.
The cooler is decorated with bands of grapes and vines, acanthus leaves near the base and Bacchus head masks holding the gadroon and shell handles. Barker Ellis was known for producing heavily plated wares on copper, often with handles and border trim of sterling silver, as this piece is marked. The copper base is bleeding through in places, adding to the warmth of the patination.
The original liner and push-fit cover are intact and the mounts are sterling silver.
12” (30.5cm) high, 10 1/4” (26cm) across the handles.
