19th century portrait of a Kingston merchant, painted by William Sawyer, dated 1857.
Sawyer (1820-1889) was a Canadian artist and photographer of the mid to late 19th century. He was born in Montreal, worked all over Ontario, and died at his home in Kingston in 1889.
The Agnes Etherington Art Centre at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario had a retrospective of his work in 1978. Included with the painting is a copy of the book.
The portrait is oil on canvas. The stretched canvas is 24 1/2" by 29 1/4". The overall frame is 28 3/4" wide by 34" high.
