An antique walking stick, dated 1892, with a detachable metal bottom. In the 1870's - 1890's, this style of walking stick would be for high profile leaders to signify their status in society. Typically used as such on "high days and holidays", they would accomodate the owner to church or a work site to signify the high status of the owner. Its silver top is elegantly decorated, In French, denoting a master builder or trades person. Possibly it was used by such a person during the great rebuild of Paris that was commissioned by Napoleon III starting in 1853 and eventually completed in 1927. When unscrewed, the stick is walking stick length. The "everyday man" usually had a plain yew stick, approx 5 feet (152.40cm) long with a "Y" or forked handle at the top unto which the thumb was placed. These became known as "thumb sticks".
