Art Deco porcelain bust by Hertwig & Co. * circa 1920/30’s. The trademark is a depiction of a cat under the letter H in a house; literally, cat house, to represent the location Katzhutte, Germany. The green trademark stamp was used circa 1914-45. The bust is in the style of Goldscheider, the prolific Austrian ceramics manufacturer of the early 20th century. 7 3/4” (19.7cm) high. $800.
* The Hertwig & Co. factory was established in Katzhutte, Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt , Germany in 1864 by partners Christoph Hertwig, Benjamin Beyermann and Carl Birkner. By 1868 Hertwig became the sole owner of the factory and the multi-generation company was family led until 1958, the last family member being Ernst Friedrich Hertwig, the great grandson of Christoph. After WWII the company was located in communist East Germany and in 1960 the company was converted to a state-owned company and closed in 1990. |
