Product NameArt Deco Jean Mayodon Art Pottery Vase
Product Description

Art Deco Jean Mayodon (1893-1967, France) “Nude Hunters With Deer” studio art pottery vase.  The bottle shaped vase is inspired by Antiquities with nude male hunters and deer.  One of the hunters is holding a large, arching bow. The scene is in bas relief, emulating a carving, with figures depicted in stone grey, with green leafed shrubbery against a purple background with an overall gold fleck craquelure finish.

The classic hunt scene is a favourite of French studio potters of the 1920s and 30s.

Unsigned, with identifier “Made in France” painted in red on the base.

A dynamic and dramatic vase!

14 1/4” (36.2cm) high, 7 1/4” (18.4cm) diameter.

$4500.

* Mayodon was appointed to the Artistic Advisor to the Manufacture of Sevres in 1934, Them to the position of Artistic Director in 1941.  He was known for his practice of using tin glazes with “fire of gold”, as seen in this example.

* We have attributed this vase to Mayodon because of the colour technique and design.
