Art Deco seal top sterling silver coffee spoons, in the original faux leather presentation box. English hallmarks for Birmingham 1938 (1) and 1939 (5). From the silversmith Lanson Ltd., of St. Dunstan Works, Pemberton Street, Birmingham, England, in business circa 1933-1970. The spoons are in excellent condition, without monograms and are ready to be gifted to a lucky recipient in the 21st century! The spoons are 3 3/4” (9.5cm) long. The box is 5 3/4” (14.6cm) by 5” (12.7cm), 7/8” (2.2cm) high. $395 for the boxed set. * Seal top spoons were popular in England in the 16th and 17th centuries. They would be “one of” spoons that the owner would carry for personal use, approximately 6 to 7” long with a pear shaped bowl. The flat top was a place for a monogram on a disc shaped like a seal, hence the name. This simplified design of a seal top spoon had a resurgence in popularity in the early 20th century, especially in Art Deco aesthetics. | |
