Austro-Hungarian 800 Fine Silver asparagus tongs, circa 1900.  Made by Vincenz Mayer’s Sohne (Sons) in Vienna, Austria.  The tongs are in beautiful condition and are without monograms.

The tongs have the mark of the Goddess Diana in a 5 lobed cartouche with a 3 at the nape of her neck, indicating 800 Fine Silver and a letter “A” at her chin, the town control office for Vienna.  The tongs are further identified by the symbol of the double eagle, representing the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary, first used in 1867.  The letters V.M.S. in a rectangular punch mark is the company identifier for V. Mayer’s Sohne.

VMS was established as jewellers in Vienna in 1810.  Throughout the late 19th and early 20th century they were Court Jewellers to the Emperor and Empress of Austria, as well as providing for the Courts of Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria, the Ottoman and Persian Empires and the Vatican.  Due to the economic consequences of WWI and the collapse of the monarchy, VMS closed in 1922.
