Product Name | Belgian Figural Silver Rowing Trophy Presented in 1888 |
Product Description | |
Belgian figural rowing trophy, made by the silversmith firm of Louis Wolfers Pere et Fils* in 800 Fine Silver. The bowl of the trophy is raised on three crossed oars, bound by rope in the center. The asymmetrical cresting wave design within the bowl is reflective of the Japanese influence in European Art Nouveau decorative arts. There is an excellent article by the ASCAS journal on the confluence of 19th century Rococo revival, Japanese inspired designs and European Art Nouveau within Wolfers ornamental silver. **
The trophy is engraved: Federation Belge (Belgian Federation Rowing Companies Championship) Des Societes D’Aviron CHAMPIONNAT A RAMEURS 1888 9 1/2” (24.1cm) high, 3 7/8” (9.9cm) diameter at the base. 311.2 grams. $2995.
* Louis Wolfers (1820-1892) registered his silver mark in Brussels, Belgium in 1852. Louis had three sons, Philippe, Max and Robert who all apprenticed in the business. Philippe became a partner in his father’s business circa 1885 and the company was renamed Louis Wolfers Pere et Fils (father & son). |
