Mid-Century Modern Josef Hospodka / Chribska Glassworks Vase

Product Details

Mid-Century Modern Czech art glass vase, designed by Josef Hospodka *, circa 1960s for Chribska Glassworks **.  Unsigned, but very much indicative of Hospodka’s signature style of colours blending from one into the next within flowing, organic shapes.  The vase graduates in colour from a sapphire blue at the rim to a pale quartz at the base and is triangular in form.

6 1/4” (15.9cm) high, 7 1/4” (18.5cm) diameter at the rim.

* Josef Michal Hospodka (1923-1989) studied at the State School of Graphics in Prague, 1938-40, pursuing glass blowing after WWII.  He was known for reinvigorated glass blowing by combining traditional methods with modern concepts of shape and colour.  Hospodka was the director of Chribska Glassworks 1958-70.  In 1970 Hospodka left to become headmaster of a glass school at Kamenicy Senov, returning to Chribska as a designer in 1985 until his death in 1989.

** The Chribska Glassworks (Sklarna Chribska) was established in 1414 in the town of Chribska, Bohemia, becoming part of Czechoslovakia in 1919.  The factory closed in 2007.
