Barovier & Toso Murano glass vase, champagne coloured with encased gold powder. The gold fleck has a subtle diagonal swirl, and is more pronounced towards the base, giving the appearance of the glass being darker at the bottom. Murano, Italy, late 19th century.
14 1/2” (36.9cm) high, 8 1/2” (21.6cm) diameter at the widest.
Barovier is one of the oldest family businesses in the world, and certainly the oldest Italian glass business, established in 1295. The Toso family have been established in Murano since about 1350. The company became Ferro Toso Vetrerie Artistiche Riunite S.A. in 1936 when Vetreria Artistica Barovier merged with Ferro Toso. In 1942 the company was renamed Barovier & Toso.
