Whitefriars first produced flint glass tableware circa 1830, before venturing  into stained glass in the 19th century.  Whitefriars capitalized on the Gothic Revival of the mid 19th century, especially with ecclesiastical commissions for refurbishing old and building new Church of England churches.  They commissioned high profile artists such  as Edward Byrne-Jones, Walter Crane and Henry Holiday to produce their window designs.  They also worked collaboratively with Sir George Gilbert Scott,  a leading Gothic Revival architect.  In the 20th century the company’s work production concentrated on art glass, being named an outstanding British Industry in the 1950s.  The company closed in 1980.
