Spode Greek Pattern Platter With Newcastle upon Tyne Coat of Arms

Product Details

Spode blue and white ironstone “Greek” pattern octagonal platter with the coat of arms for the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, England *.  The Greek pattern was introduced by Spode circa 1806 and has been made in different colour combinations.  This pattern combination with the Greek border and the centrally located Newcastle upon Tyne city motto has the English registry number of 639277, dating the design to 1914.  Also, this platter has the impressed mark of L over 33, which dates the firing of this platter in July of 1933.

The platter is in very good condition with minor knife marks only.

12 3/4” (32.4cm) by 9 1/4” (23.5cm).

* The Latin motto Fortiter Defendit Triumphans, translates to “Triumphing by Brave Defence”.  The motto was adopted following the city of Newcastle upon Tyne’s resistance against the Scots during the English Civil War in 1644.
