Springer & Co. Porcelain Figural Group With Cherub, Dog & Cart

Product Details

Charming Victorian era hand painted porcelain figural group of a cherub walking alongside a dog hauling a wheeled cart with basket.  Made by Springer & Co. Elbogen, Bohemia, circa 1885-1900.

The basket is embellished with multiple colours of flowers and leaves on one side.  The cherub has a wrap around his waist and a very unique feature are his rainbow-hued wings.  The group are positioned on a mottled ground, suggesting they are on a road.

Impressed marks on the base:  5007, 40 and an upraised arm holding a sword within a shield.  This is the trademark for Springer & Co. of Elbogen, Bohemia (present day Loket, Czech Republic).  The company was established in 1815 by Rudolf Eugen Haidinger and Eugen Haidinger, with the business name evolving over the years to Spring & Co. by 1885.

There is very minor loss to the flower petals and the gilding; wear consistent with age and use.  Overall, this figural group is in very good condition.

5 1/2” (14cm) high, 6” (15.3cm) by 3” (7.6cm) at the oval base.
