Antique Staffordshire Fox & Hound Stirrup Cups

Product Details

Antique Staffordshire Fox & Hound stirrup cups, * English mid-19th century.  The pairing of the fox and the hound is a popular theme in English Hunt scenes.  The pair are hand painted and are in good condition, with minor crazing only.

5 1/4” (13.3cm) long, 2 3/4” (7cm) by 2 1/2” (6.4cm) at the drinking end.

$3500 for the pair.

* Stirrup cups in pottery and porcelain became fashionable in England at the end of the 1700s.  They were originally made in silver.  The intent was for a servant to pass the cup up to a rider already on horseback, ie. with their feet already in the stirrups.  A stirrup cup is a “parting cup”, for a drink / toast given to guests at the beginning of the hunt.
