Mid Century Modern Silver Jackalope Pitcher

Product Details

Mid-century modern silver plate Jackalope pitcher, made in Mexico.

A jackalope is a jack rabbit with antlers, a mythological beast with an origin story in Europe dating back to Medieval Bavaria.  It became a popular folklore beast in the American mid-west with enterprising taxidermists in Wyoming in 1932.  Variations of the tale originate in Minnesota, Wyoming, North and South Dakota.

This jackalope pitcher is silver plate on copper with a stone embedded handle, possibly malachite or azurite.  Trademarked on the bottom Los Castillo, Taxco, Mexico.  “Plateado” translates to plated.  This style of impressed mark was used by Los Castillo circa 1939-62.

Minor wear to the silver plating, wear consistent with age and use.

9 1/2” (24.1cm) high at the handle, 5 1/2” (14cm) diameter, not counting the handle.
