Neoclassical Sterling Silver Claret Jug, Elkington & Co. Birmingham 1875

A fine Victorian era sterling silver claret jug made in the Neoclassical style.  English hallmarks for Birmingham 1875, made by the renowned silversmiths, Elkington & Co. (Frederick Elkington) of Newhall Street, Birmingham.  

The claret jug is of an elongated amphora / urn shape, rising from an egg and dart decorsted pedestal base, waisted neck, hinged lid and an elegantly fluted handle.  The body of the claret jug is beautifully engraved with a classical Greek scene of dancing maidens, against a stippled background.

15 5/8” (38.4cm) high, 5” (12.7cm) diameter.
