Victorian Gothic Revival sterling silver and cut crystal claret, fully hallmarked for London 1856.  From the silver workshop of James Charles Edington.  The unique design incorporates a spring activated mechanism on the sturdy handle.  When gripping the handle the narrow bar is brought towards the handle, lifting the lid.

The collar is engraved with a crest and the inscription “Evancelium per Christum”, Latin for “The Gospel of Christ”.
