Victorian Sterling Silver Claret Jug, Sheffield 1867, Retailed by Charles Nephew & Co of Calcutta

Victorian Neoclassical inspired sterling silver claret jug, English hallmarks for Sheffield 1867.  From the silversmiths Martin, Hall & Co. (Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall) of Shrewsbury Works, Sheffield, England.  The claret jug is further identified on the base as being made for retail by Charles Nephew & Co. of Calcutta (present day Kolkata, West Bengal, India).  Charles Nephew & Co. was active circa 1848-1870.

The neoclassical inspired urn form claret jug rises from an acanthus leaf decorated pedestal foot, ornately festooned with ribbons and bows in both engraved and repousse work, with a naturalistic vine handle.

The claret jug is monogrammed “JTS” in Old English font. 

13” (33cm) high, 6” (15.3cm) diameter at the widest.
