Georgian Sterling Silver Henry Chawner Tankard, Dated 1788

Product Details

Georgian era sterling silver quartz tankard, hallmarked London 1788, from the silversmith firm of Henry Chawner of London, England *.  The robust, barrel shaped tankard has horizontal ribbing alternating with bands of raised floral scrolling against a stippled background and is crested with a depiction of a three masked sailing ship.

The gold washed interior is in good condition.

6” (15.3cm) high, 4” (10.2cm) diameter at the rim, 

6 1/2” (16.5cm) across the middle including the handle.

646.7 grams.

* The silversmith firm originated with Robert Nelme, circa 1680 and evolved through partnerships to include members of other families of illustrious silversmiths such as the Chawner family in the later hall of the 18th century and many generations of the Barnard family throughout the 19th century.  The company existed until 2003.
