The legend of the Lincoln Imp is immortalized in the medieval Lincoln Cathedral, England., built in the 12th to 14th century. The legend is that a mischievous Imp sent by the devil to wreak havoc was caught by an angel and turned into stone, freezing him forever in place. The Lincoln Imp has become a popular symbol of Lincoln, reappearing over doorways and as a mascot for sports teams.
