Gebruder Friedlander 750 Fine Silver Candelabra, Germany circa 1870-80

Substantial five light 750 Fine Silver candelabra, Germany, circa 1870-80.

The baluster form candelabra rises from cast grape and vine feet.  The base is decorated with an engraved Greek Key band that wraps around the bottom, with a Greek Key band framed roundel which is monogrammed.  The 5 light branched top is removable, so that they can be used as candlesticks.

Trademarked:  12 Gebr. Friedlander.  

“12” is the mark for 12 loth / lothige, equivalent to 750/1000 fineness of silver.  Germany last used this system of marking silver in 1888, replacing it with the crescent moon and crown mark.

Gebruder Friedlander (Brothers), in business 1829-1938 in Berlin, did bespoke work for the Prussian Court, holding a Royal Warrant from Princess Louise, Grand Duchess of Baden (1838-1923), the sister of the Kaiser, Emperor Frederick III.
