A handsome Ashford black and banded inlaid hardstone Pietra Dura candlestick, English, mid-19th century.

Ashford Derbyshire produced fine Pietra Dura decorative items sourced from locally sourced semi precious stones, including malachite, jasper, rosso, sienna, connemara and oakstone.  The multi-colour inlay contrasts beautifully with the polished black marble body, which is technically fine black limestone.  The Ashford Derbyshire Pietra Dura gained popularity in the 19th century as a more accessible, domestic counterpart to the Italian produced Grand Tour Pietra Dura souvenirs.

The candlestick is in good and usable condition with very minor surface wear only, consistent with age and use.
