Sheffield Plate Tea Urn

Sheffield plate tea urn, English, circa 1800.  The simple classical urn form is raised on a pedestal foot, ornamented only with lion mask & loop handles.

The tea urn has been replated in the 20th century.

Included with the tea urn is a letter of evaluation from Robert Ensko Ltd. of NY, NY, specialists in antique silver, dated 1945.

8” (20.3cm) by 6 1/2” (16.5cm) at the base, 9 1/2” (24.1cm) across the handles,

18 3/4” (47.6cm) high.

Sheffield Plate, often called Old Sheffield Plate, is a historical material and technique created by fusing a thin sheet of sterling silver onto a base metal, usually copper. Discovered in the 1740s in Sheffield, England, it provided an affordable alternative to solid sterling silver.
