Vienna Porcelain Chocolate Cup, Cover & Saucer

Product Details

Vienna porcelain chocolate cup, cover and saucer, circa 1890-1900.  Elaborately hand painted with two scenes from mythology and gilded throughout, on a cobalt blue ground.  Both paintings are signed.  The cup has a double twisted snake handle and is raised on a three-paw foot.

Marked on both the cup and saucer with the beehive / bindenschild mark.  The cup is identified as Aphrodite underneath and the saucer is identified as “Trompeter von Sackingen” *.

Very minor wear to the gilding, consistent with age and use.

The cup is 3 1/4” (8.3cm) high, 5” (12.7cm) high to the top of the finial,

2 3/4” (7cm) diameter.

The saucer is 5 3/4” (14.6cm) diameter.

* The poem “Der Trompeter von Sackingen” was written in 1853 by the German poet and novelist Joseph Viktor von Scheffel (1826-1886) and was the basis for the popular opera of the same name by Viktor Nessler (1841-1890), first performed in 1884.
