Exuberant Victorian Silver And Partial Gilt Epergne, circa 1868

Product Details

Exuberant Victorian silver and partial gilt epergne, from the prestigious silver firm of Elkington & Co. of Birmingham, England, dated 1868.

The central column of the epergne is a stylized Grecian Revival urn, guarded by three sphinxes, on a platform supported by three lions paw feet.  The top of the epergne is trimmed with hanging chain and ball pendants.

The epergne is silver plate and partially gilded, with minor wear only to the gilt.

The base has a “Published” date  (patent date) of June 1866.  Elkington is one of the few English silver plate companies that used date letters for manufacturing.  The “F” in the Elkington trademark stamps dates the manufacture of the epergne to 1868.

A dramatic addition to a table!

15 1/2” (39.4cm) high, 6 1/2” (16.5cm) diameter.
