Stella Evelyn Grier RCA (1898-1994) was a Canadian artist, born in Toronto. She was the daughter and student of the well known Canadian portrait painter Sir Wyly Grier. She studied at the Art Students League in New York and St. Martin’s School, Goldsmith College and the New Cross School, all in London, England. Upon completing her studies Grier opened a portrait studio, but with the onset of WWI she returned to Canada and became a free lance commercial artist working for the T. Eaton’s store, and in Boston. Grier later returned to England, teaching children’s fashion drawing at the Carlton Studios in London. Coming back to Canada she taught at King’s Hall, Compton Quebec and later at the Department of Archaeology at the Royal Ontario Museum. Grier also illustrated children’s books.
Grier worked mostly in pastels but did some portraiture in oil. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States, South America and England. In 1930 Grier was elected an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy.
