Victorian Epergne, From Meriden Britannia Company of Meriden, Connecticut, circa 1880-90

Product Details

Exuberantly ornamented Victorian epergne in silver plate and partial gilt, from Meriden Britannia Company of Meriden, Connecticut, circa 1880-90.

The epergne features an angel for the central column, standing gracefully on a stylized dolphin, which in turn is supported by three cherubs on a graduated pedestal.  An almost hidden detail is the mask on her waist band.  Another subtle detail is that the angel’s robe, wings and hair are partial gilt, as are the wings and hair of the cherubs.

The base has three 6 1/2” diameter pedestal brackets, which could support bowls or pillar candles.  There are three more 3 dimensional masks and a decorative frieze with stylized swans and palm leaves.

The intricate details, both subtle and obvious are astounding; a splendid Victorian epergne!

25 1/2” (64.7cm) high, 19” (48.3cm) diameter at the widest.
