Sheffield Plate Inkwell & Stand

Sheffield plate and cut glass inkwell and stand, English, mid-19th century.  The copper base metal shows just a little, mostly on the pen rests.  It is what Sheffield plate enthusiasts refer to as “bleeding”.  The ink well and stand is in good condition.

8 3/4” (22.3cm) by 7” (17.8cm), 3 1/4” (8.2cm) total height.

Sheffield Plate, often called Old Sheffield Plate, is a historical material and technique created by fusing a thin sheet of sterling silver onto a base metal, usually copper. Discovered in the 1740s in Sheffield, England, it provided an affordable alternative to solid sterling silver.
