Edwardian Sterling Silver Reynolds Angels Hand Mirror, Birmingham 1906

Product Details

Edwardian English sterling silver Reynolds Angels * design hand mirror, hallmarked Birmingham 1906.  The five angels / cherubs are shown in different poses against a textured “cloudy” sky, as if they are descending from the Heavens.

The hand mirror is in good and usable condition, with the original beveled glass mirror.  Monogramed “MG” in script.

11 1/4” (28.6cm) long, 6 1/8” (15.5cm) wide.

* Reynolds Angels is the name given to a portrait painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) first exhibited in 1787.  The painting depicted five different angles of five year old Lady Frances Gordon, who sat for the portrait in 1786 and 1787.  The portrait inspiration was of paintings with cherubs by Carlo Maratta (1625-1713) an Italian Baroque painter.

The Reynolds Angels design inspired many silversmiths in Edwardian era England to produce dresser sets, vanity pieces and other traditionally feminine items in silver.
