21 Club Sterling Silver & Oak Pepper Grinder

Vintage sterling silver and oak pepper grinder from the famed 21 Club of 21 West 52nd Street, New York City.  The club was opened as a speakeasy in 1930; a favourite of artists, celebrities, politicians and members of old New York to see and be seen.

The club was sold in 1985 with the new owners undertaking extensive renovations.  At that time much of the original tableware was sold at auction, including this pepper grinder. 

The restaurant, bar and lounges of the 21 Club were outfitted with the very best quality of tableware; the pepper grinder is a lovely example of that.  It is solid oak with sterling silver mounts, showcasing the iconic symbol of the club, the cast iron gates stating “21”.  On either side of the symbol is an engraving “Good Hope”.
