Elkington, Mason & Co. Silver Plate Butter Dish circa 1842-61

Elkington, Mason & Co. * silver plate butter dish, made in Birmingham, England, circa 1842-61.  The formal “egg and dart” design of the fixed pedestal butter dish is proudly topped with a fully three dimensional cow finial.  The interior is fitted with a glass insert, providing space for crushed ice beneath.  The size and shape of the dish is also a perfect size for caviar.

The silver plating is in very good condition.

7 1/2” (19cm) diameter, 9 1/4” (23.5cm) across the handles, 5 1/2” (14cm) high.

* In 1842 Elkington & Co. received financial backing from Josiah Mason.  From 1842 to 1861 the company was known as Elkington, Mason & Co.
