John Grinsell & Sons Butter Tub with Cow Finial

Product Details

Antique butter tub, made by John Grinsell & Sons, Birmingham, England, circa 1871-1905.  John Grinsell & Sons was active as early as early as 1864 as Grinsell & Bourne.  The company was known for producing “British Oak Work”;  ice buckets, butter tubs, biscuit barrels, sardine boxes, etc. with ceramic liners in oak and silver plate frames, most often with a silver shield suitable for engraving and in this case, with a figural cow finial.  The John Grinsell & Sons trademark of the cupid with bow and arrow is seen on both the ceramic liner and on the silver plate mounts.  The back stamp on the liner also includes the Latin phrase “Semper Paratus” (“Always Ready”), used by John Grinsell & Sons on the ceramic portions of their wares.  The ceramic liner is repaired but can still be used carefully.

4 1/2” (11.4cm) high, 6 1/2” (16.5cm) diameter at the widest.

$350 condition noted.
