Antique Dutch 833 Fine Silver asparagus server, dated 1907. The server is satin finished, which shows the engraved floral wreath design nicely in contrast. The pierced scrolling foliage design with engraved 8 petal daisies is repeated in the central wreath and again on the fold of the server. The server has three marks on the inside of the curved section: the Dutch mark for 833 Fine Silver (the Lion Passant above the number 2 in a hexagon), the letter X in an Old English style font (the date letter for 1907) and VK below a crescent moon, the maker’s mark for J.M. van Kempen en Zoon of Voorschoten, The Netherlands . The server is marked on the back of the handle with the regional assay office of the Hague (Minerva’s helmet identified with the letter C). This asparagus server is an amazing design and in beautiful condition. 132.8 grams. 8 3/4” (22.2cm) long, 4” (10.2cm) wide. Van Kempen en Zoon (Van Kempen & Sons) was established in the mid 19th century and was known for reinterpreting historical designs, including classical inspired Greek design motifs like this asparagus server.
