English Renaissance Revival sterling silver claret jug of the Late Victorian era, hallmarked for London 1886. The claret jug is exuberantly worked with bands of ornamentation expressing repousse work and engraving against a stippled background. The design motifs from top to bottom include: leaf and vine, garlands of fruit and berries, acanthus leaves, friezes of scrolling floral vines, bell flowers and elephant ear leaves on the pedestal base. Made by the silversmith partnership (and brothers) of Walter and John Barnard. The firm originated with Robert Nelme, circa 1680, and evolved through partnerships to include members of other families of illustrious silversmiths such as the Chawner family in the later half of the 18th century, and many generations of the Barnard family throughout the 19th century. The company existed until 2003. 11 1/4” (28.6cm) high, 5 3/4” (14.6cm) across the spout to handle. $5995. Found under trophy and trophies. |
