English Victorian sterling silver cake basket, from the silver shop of Edward, John & William Barnard, hallmarked for london 1849.  Retailed by Widdowson & Veale, 73 Strand, London.  Widdowson & Veale, established in 1835 were, purveyors of fine goods to the Royal Navy, and “Sword Cutlers” to HRH Prince Albert.

This spectacular basket rises from a pedestal foot, featuring multiple motifs in the pierced designs, applied floral border and figural vine and leaf hinged handle.  The base of the basket has a hand engraved family crest in French; “Toujours Pret”, Always Ready.

The depicted crest of the leather sheathed arm holding a three pointed cross is one of the associated family crests of Clan Donald/Macdonells of Glengarry, Scotland.
