Vintage Flavio Poli Sommerso glass vase, designed for Seguso Vetri d’Arte *.  The vase has layers of coloured glass; purple glass cased in blue and further encased in a clear layer.  Murano, Italy, 20th century.

Sommerso is the Italian word for “submerged”, referencing the multiple colour layers within the glass.

16” (40.6cm) high, 7” (17.8cm) by 4 1/2” (11.5cm).

* From our research, Flavio Poli glass vases were not signed, as is the case with this piece.  Some of the vases may still have the original paper label attached but that is rare as they were often intentionally removed or washed off over the decades.  The attribution is determined by the quality and crispness of the colour transitions  and the clarity of the clear crystal layer.  Flavio Poli vases are also very heavy.  This vase weighs just over 10 pounds, approximately 4.5kg.

Poli developed the Sommerso (submerged, or layered) glass through the early to mid-1950s when he was the artistic director for Seguso Vetri d’Arte.  The larger and more dynamically coloured pieces, such as this one, are later, produced through the 1960s.
