American sterling silver centrepiece bowl, made by George B. Sharp of Philadelphia, PA, circa 1866-74. This handsome bowl shows the early influence of the Aesthetic Movement, starting to take hold in the late 1860s. The repeating palm leaf motif is a prominent design feature, with a heavy rope braid rim and shell motif cast bracket feet. Sharp (1819-1904) born in Ireland, started his career apprenticing in the USA circa 1850. This business existed until 1874, dating this bowl to the period of 1866-74. 8” (20.3cm) diameter, 5 1/2” (14cm) high. 578.3 grams. |
