Product Description

Antique silver plate soup tureen / centrepiece bowl, made for the Guion Shipping Line, dated 1881.  The full name of the line was the Liverpool & Great Western Steamship Company Limited, established in 1866, closed in 1894.  Their main business was passenger service for the Liverpool to Queenstown, NY route.  The Guion crest is engraved on one side of the tureen, approximately 1 3/4” wide.

The silver plate tureen / centrepiece bowl was made by Elkington & Co. of Birmingham, England *.

16 1/4” (41.3cm) long by 9 1/2” (24.1cm) wide, 6 3/4” (17.1cm) high.

* Elkington & Co. of Birmingham was awarded the first British patent for electroplating in 1840.  Elkington developed its own date cypher code, similar to the British sterling silver date letter system.  The letter V that is part of the company trademark on the bottom of the tureen is the date letter for 1881.
