Rare 18th century hand painted German porcelain vases, made by the Frankenthal Porcelain Factory, circa 1755-1762. * The vases are hand painted with genre scenes of villagers at rest, seated around a table, framed by puce coloured scrolls, with large floral sprays on the reverse and smaller blooms scattered throughout, with bands of gilding at the base and rim. The quality and condition of the painting and gilding is very fine. 9 1/2” (24.1cm) high, 6 1/2” (16.5cm) diameter at the widest. $8000 for the pair. * The Frankenthal Porcelain Factory (Porzellanmanufaktur Frankenthal) was founded in 1755 by Karl Hannong in the German town of Frankenthal in Rhineland-Palatinate (a state in present day western Germany). Hannong had previously produced hard paste porcelain in Strasbourg but needed to relocate as a result of King Louis XVI giving a monopoly for porcelain in France to Sevres. The license to operate was granted by the Elector of Palatinate, Karl Theodor. Hannong died in 1760 and his two sons were not able to reach an agreement, while debts to the Elector mounted. Finally, in 1762 Karl Theodor assumed control of the company and it was successful for decades, known for producing quality porcelain until closing in 1799. | |
