Mid-Century Modern Sommerso glass vase, designed by Jan Beranek for Skrdlovice Glassworks.  Design #5988, created in 1959 and made in many different colour variations. This vibrant vase features layers of coloured glass; violet cased in blue and further encased in a clear layer.  Enough of the original foil label is intact to identify it as made in Czechoslovakia (present day Czech Republic).

11 3/4” (30cm) high, 5 1/4” (13.4cm) diameter at the widest.

*Sommerso is the Italian word for “submerged” referencing the multiple colour layers within the glass.

**Jan Beranek (born in 1933 in Polevsko) was trained in glass blowing by his father Emanuel Beranek at the Skrdlovice Glassworks.  Jan Beranek worked continually at the glassworks from 1948 until his retirement in 1987.
