Japanese sterling silver Neoclassical centrepiece bowl, retailed by Mitsukoshi Department Store, Tokyo, Japan, circa 1920.

The centrepiece is of an oval form supported by six Doric columns that are in turn, raised from a smaller oval platform raised on four bracket feet.  The interior of the bowl is gilded.  The bowl is unusual heavy; 3390.9 gram weight total.

Mitsukoshi was founded in 1673 by a fabric merchant, Takatoshi Mitsui, to retail kimonos directly to the public.  The firm expanded continuously over the centuries and became Japan’s first department store in 1904.  To this day Mitsukoshi is known for fine goods and services.
