Vaphio, or Vapheio is an ancient site in Laconia, Greece, famous for the discovery of an ancient burial tomb in 1889. The pottery found at the site dates circa 1500-1450 BC, with the gold objects and gemstone seals thought to already be a century old when the tomb was sealed. The most famous of the artifacts are a pair of gold cups, one thought to be Minoan and the other Mycenaean in origin. This silver cup is a faithful replication of one of the cups in sterling silver, made for a wealthy English clientele interested in art from the ancient world. |
