Minton Majolica Aesthetic Movement charger, circa 1871-75. This large earthenware charger has been hand painted in polychrome enamels, depicting a bird in a fantastical garden of flowers, leaves and berries. The scene includes multiple vibrant colours and textures against a black background in the popular Japanesque fashion of the day. The charger is in excellent condition. 15 1/4” (38.7cm) diameter, 1 3/4” (4.4cm) deep. $4500.00 CAD This charger was potted and painted at Minton’s Art Pottery at Kensington Gore, London. This art pottery studio was opened in 1871 by Colin Minton Campbell, a descendant of founder Thomas Minton. The studio opened under the direction of painter and book illustrator William Stephen Coleman with the talents of young artists at the near by Kensington National Art Training School (now known as the Royal College of Art).
