A very handsome George III era sterling silver sauce (gravy) boat, hallmarked London 1801. From the prestigious multi-generation silversmith Bateman family.  This example is clearly marked PA AB WB, for Peter, Ann & William Bateman, with their mark registered and in use 1800-1805.  The robust shape is elegantly simple in form, with bead trim border at the rim and pedestal base.  Crested with a battle axe, long associated with the Jenkins family. *

7 3/4” (19.7cm) long by 3 3/4” (9.5cm) wide, 5 1/4” (13.3cm) high at the handle.

* Jenkins and its many spelling variations (Jankins, Jenkynns, Jinkins, etc.) are first noted in Wales and Devon/Cornwall, England in the 12th century.  The battle axe crest was a symbol of military duty and service; first introduced to heraldry to represent participation in the Crusades.
