Vintage Skookum art glass vase, pulled peacock feather design in a mottled mauve colour with iridescent finish. Skookum Art Glass Inc. was established in 1978 in Calgary, AB by Robert Held *. Robert Held moved his studio to Vancouver in 1987 and from that time on signed his work with his name. This vase has the etched "SKOOKUM" signature at the base, identifying it as being from his earlier work period in Calgary. 9" (22.8cm) high, 5" (12.7cm) diameter at the widest. * Robert Held (born 1943 Santa Ana, California) initially studied painting, then ceramics, earning a Masters of Fine Arts at the University of California. He accepted the position of Head of Ceramics at Sheridan School of Design in Oakville, ON; discovering his passion for glass blowing accidentally during a demonstration in 1968 in Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. He initiated the hot glass program in Sheridan in 1969; the first to do so at college level in Canada. Many consider Robert Held to be the pioneer of Canadian art glass in the 20th century. | |
