Classic Grecian urn inspired sterling silver curling trophy, from the Hamilton Thistle Club *, presented in 1945. English hallmarks for London 1939, made by prolific silversmiths Mappin & Webb of Royal Cutlery Works, Norfolk Street, Sheffield. The trophy is engraved on the front: ** a 5 point coronet over the letter “A”, the Earl of Athlone, Governor General of Canada, with the symbol of the Order of the Garter *** with two columns of names on either side,

* The Hamilton Thistle Club was established in 1853 in Hamilton, Ontario and existed until 2002. ** The 16th Governor General of Canada (1940-46) was the 1st Earl of Athlone, 3rd creation, Prince Alexander of Teck (1874-1957). ***The inscription within the garter belt is in Old Norman French, “Honi soit qui mal y pense” translates to: “Shame on anyone who thinks evil of it”, the motto of the Order of the Garter. The Earl of Athlone was appointed a Knight Companion of the Order of the Garter in 1928. When searched this is found under trophy and trophies. |
