The hand tooled and gilded leather box belonged to The Honourable Frank Mackenzie Ross (1891-1971) the 19th Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, in office 1955-60.  F.M. Ross was the stepfather of The Right Honourable John Turner (born 1929) the 17th Prime Minister of Canada, 1984.

The Latin motto on the cover, Splendor Sine Occasu translates to:

"Splendour Without Diminishment", the motto of the province of British Columbia.
