* Salvador Ysart, originally from Spain, had worked at many French glassworks, including Schneider. He was recruited from France to the UK in 1915 to make laboratory glass to contribute to the war effort. After the war Ysart was recruited by Mr. & Mrs. Moncrieff to their glassworks in Perth, Scotland to make art glass. Over time, Salvador was joined by his four sons in glass blowing at this company, called Monart, an amalgamation of the surnames of Moncrieff and Ysart. In 1946 Ysart and two of his four sons left Monart and set up a competing glass company called Vasart. Vasart glass was similar to Monart, but the colours were more pastel and the pieces are typically signed Vasart in script acid etched on the base, as is this basket. In 1964 the company was taken over by Strathearn Glass. |
