Product CodeMHCWRSAB6233
Product NameVictorian Martin Hall Boxed Apostle / Berry Spoons, circa 1890
Product Description

Victorian silver plate and gold washed apostle berry spoons in the original presentation box, circa 1890.  The spoons are silver plated and gold washed, with shell form bowls, twisted spiral handles and fully three dimensional apostle form tips.

From the prolific silversmith firm of Martin Hall & Co. (Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall) of Shrewsbury Works, Sheffield, England, who produced fine tableware in both sterling silver and silver plate.  The spoons are stamped with company marks used circa 1860-90s.  The letter “W” in a hexagon is presumed to be date code, as yet undocumented by silver researchers.  The presence of the symbol of the crown dates the spoons pre-1895 when the use of the crown was prohibited.

The spoons were made for the jeweller and retailer W. Russell & Son of 19 Argyll Arcade Glasgow, as identified by the gilded stamp on the lid of the presentation box.  The Argyll Arcade was built in 1827 as Scotland’s first ever indoor shopping mall and it still exists, known for luxury jewellery stores.

The spoons and box are in good condition and are not monogrammed.

The spoons are 8”  (203cm) long, 2 3/8” (6cm) at the widest.

The box is 9 1/2” (24.1cm) by 7 3/4” (19.7cm), 1 1/2” (3.9cm) high.

$795 for the boxed set of four.
